Smoke was coming out of the roof at a school in Columbia, SC fire department says
A Midlands school had to be evacuated Thursday, according to the Columbia Fire Department.
Smoke was seen coming off the roof of St. Andrews Middle School in Columbia, the fire department said in a news release. The Richland 1 school is near the junction of Broad River Road and Bush River Road.
At about 11:30 a.m., firefighters responded to reports of smoke on the roof, according to the release. The firefighters encountered a haze after entering the building.
Firefighters learned that the smoke was coming from an overheated motor in an HVAC unit for one of the classrooms, the fire department said.
Students and staff evacuated the building, but were able to re-enter after it had been ventilated, according to the release.
No one was injured and the issue was resolved, the fire department said.
