Those who are visiting downtown Columbia for the Thanksgiving weekend will find a bit of a holiday gift: free parking.

The city of Columbia announced there will be complimentary parking at many parking meters and city-owned garages throughout the extended Thanksgiving weekend.

Downtown parking meters will be free citywide on Thursday Nov. 28, according to a release from the city. Then, on Friday Nov. 29 and Saturday Nov. 30, meters will be free everywhere in the city except for Five Points, which will enforce meters from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. those days. And on Sunday Dec. 1, meters citywide will be free, as is normally the case on Sundays.

As far as city-owned parking garages, officials say the gates will be raised at the Lincoln, Park, Lady and Sumter garages beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, and parking there will be free Wednesday night, all day on Thanksgiving and all day on Black Friday.

Meanwhile, the parking deck at 2221 Devine St. in Five Points will have free parking on Friday and Saturday.
