Authorities are investigating after human skeletal remains were found in a wooded area in the Midlands.

The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that the remains were discovered at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26 in a wooded area just off East York Street in Camden. The remains were initially found by some kids playing in the woods, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office, the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office and the Camden Police Department responded to the scene and determined the remains were human. A crime scene unit from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was summoned to process the scene.

The identity of the deceased remained unknown as of Wednesday morning, the sheriff’s office said. A cause of death and length of time since the person died has yet to be determined.

The sheriff’s office and coroner’s office continue to investigate the incident.

“These type of investigations take time,” the sheriff’s office said on social media.
