Two people were killed and others were injured in a six-car crash on a busy South Carolina interstate on the day before Thanksgiving.

S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Lena Butler said the multicar wreck happened at 6:52 a.m. Wednesday on I-95 south near Dillon.

According to Butler, a number of vehicles were stopped in traffic along the interstate when a 2020 Volvo tractor trailer traveling southbound crashed into a 2017 Honda CRV. That set off what the trooper called a “chain reaction” wreck that eventually involved six vehicles.

There was only one occupant in the Honda CRV, who died at the scene, the Highway Patrol said. The driver of a 2010 Honda Accord also died in the crash, and the passenger in the Accord was airlifted to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence for treatment. The driver of a 2024 Nissan Sentra that was involved in the wreck also was taken to an area hospital.

The identities of the deceased had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
