Roaches all over kitchens. Rat droppings. Midlands restaurants with worst November inspections
South Carolina health inspectors found multiple violations at restaurants in the Midlands in November, from roaches crawling in kitchens to rat droppings and orange growth in an ice machine. The state each month releases grades and inspection reports for food establishments across Midlands counties.
Here are the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in November.
Sunrise Grill at 404 E Martintown Road in Aiken
Sunrise Grill had an inspection on Nov. 5 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed rodent droppings and dead insects on the floor throughout the facility.
Potatoes, eggs, flour and soda syrup were seen stored on the floor in the backroom. Sandwiches were seen being cut on a heavily soiled cutting board. Certain foods were not kept at proper holding temperatures.
Bacon and eggs were seen held by the hand sink.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Nov. 15 and got an A grade.
Country Cupboard at 7801 Edmund Hwy in Lexington
Country Cupboard had an inspection on Nov. 12 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed roaches crawling throughout the kitchen on floors, walls and equipment. Also observed flies on food contact surfaces in the kitchen.
Certain foods not kept at proper holding temperatures. Holes were seen in the wall behind a sink. Spray bottles without names of contents were seen stored above the food prep area.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Nov. 22 and got another C grade. A second followup inspection has not yet been held.
New Dragon at 948-A Main St. in Lexington
New Dragon had an inspection on Nov. 19 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed raw shrimp stored with fruit, egg roll wrapping dough and over ready to eat foods. Also observed was raw chicken stored over noodles and wontons stored in between trays of raw chicken in the walk in freezer.
Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Pans and containers of raw chicken were seen sitting out at room temperature to thaw.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Nov. 26 and got an A grade.
RF’s Corner Grill at 712 W Main St. in Lexington
RF’s Corner Grill had an inspection on Nov. 20 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed dead insects throughout the facility.
Raw burger patties were seen stored above ready to eat food in the prep cooler. The facility was seen not cooking beef patties and chicken wings properly. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures.
Gaps were seen at the back door entrance. Food was seen stored on the floor by the back door.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Nov. 26 and got another C grade. A second followup inspection has not yet been held.
Country Corner at 600 Pope St. in Newberry
Country Corner had an inspection on Nov. 5 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed an excessive amount of flies in the facility.
Shelled eggs were seen stored above ready to eat foods in the refrigerator. An orange and black microbial growth was seen in the ice machine. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Nov. 15 and got an A grade.
Applebee’s at 4505 Devine St. in Richland
Applebee’s had an inspection on Nov. 25 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed an employee wipe hands on apron while changing tasks without changing gloves or washing hands.
Dishes with adhesive labels and food debris on them were seen stored as clean. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Cutting boards were seen with discoloration and deep grooves. Soiled floors with black buildup and food debris were seen throughout the facility.
A required followup inspection has not yet been held.
China 1 at 11107 Broad River Road in Richland
China 1 had an inspection on Nov. 18 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed dead insects and spiders throughout the facility.
Bagged onions were seen stored directly on the floor. Raw beef was seen stored above produce in the walk-in cooler. An open package of mushrooms was seen in the mop sink near an empty raw chicken case. Plastic containers used for breading and coating raw proteins was found crusty, soiled and unclean. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Dirty knives were seen adhered to a soiled magnetic strip. Food matter and debris was seen on equipment and shelving.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Nov. 22 and got an A grade.
Tacos Locos & Grill at 2009 N Beltline Blvd in Richland
Tacos Locos & Grill had an inspection on Nov. 18 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed live roaches in the food prep and ware washing areas. Also observed were dead roaches in bar cabinets, food prep and dry storage areas.
An employee was seen switching tasks from handling raw meats and dirty dishes to working with ready to eat foods without washing hands. Multiple employees were seen picking items off the floor and then return to work with food without washing hands.
Uncovered shrimp and beef were seen stored below uncovered chicken in the walk-in cooler. Certain foods were not allowed to cool properly.
A required followup inspection has not yet been held.
