There’s a new restaurant open near the University of South Carolina’s Colonial Life Arena, and it’s a throwback to a fondly remembered campus eatery.

Operated by the university’s dining service, Carolina Food Co., The Golden Spur Grill has opened at 700 Lincoln St. in USC’s 700 Lincoln development across the street from the Colonial Life Arena where the Gamecocks play basketball. The restaurant is listed as “recently opened” on Google and an employee said Tuesday was the grill’s first day.

It is in the spot that formerly was Angell Bros. 1801 Grille. That restaurant closed in October after being open under different operators over time — since 2017.

“The Golden Spur pays homage to a restaurant and bar of the same name in Russell House during the 1980s,” the Golden Spur website says. “The goal of rebirthing this once beloved campus spot is to bring a new experience for student dining as well as bringing a sense of nostalgia to alumni.

“At The Golden Spur, we offer a delightful fusion of classic American flavors with a modern twist. Our menu is crafted to satisfy diverse palates, featuring everything from succulent steaks and juicy burgers to fresh, vibrant salads and innovative vegetarian options.”

Earlier this year, USC opened a different restaurant in its Campus Village called The Golden Spur. That location, which is located on Whaley Street, has now been rebranded as The Spur. USC’s dining division annoucned that change, and noted that the restaurant at 700 Lincoln was going to be christened The Golden Spur Grill, in a recent Instagram post.

The menu at The Golden Spur Grill includes brunch items such as pancakes, French toast and omelets, lunch items such as burgers and chicken sandwiches, and dinner entrees including steaks and pork chops.

The Golden Spur Grill is debuting during a week with several events planned at the adjacent Colonial Life Arena. The Gamecocks women’s basketball team hosts Duke on Thursday night, while the USC men’s hoops team welcomes East Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
