One Greenville-area restaurant received the worst score from inspectors in November.

In all, 294 restaurants were inspected by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture in November. Both the number inspected and the number receiving a C grade were a marked decrease from the number of inspections completed in recent months.

Shortfields of Simpsonville was the worst scoring restaurant with 72 points, a C.

The inspector saw a food handler touching ready to eat chicken with bare hands, no oyster shellstock tags, which identify where the shellfish came from, and raw uncovered ground beef next to uncovered ready to eat foods.

A large cooked beef roast, cooked earlier in the day, was not being held at the correct temperature. Management threw it out.

Also at improper temperatures were ground beef, cooked mushrooms, sliced tomatoes, cooked corn and egg batter. This was a consecutive violation.

The inspector saw gaps under the back door leading to outside walk-in coolers, which dripped water into a container stored on top of uncovered food. The coolers also had a heavy amount of ice.

Food was being prepared next to a hand sink without a splash guard and clean utensils were stored inside an unclean divider.

Plastic containers were reused with old date labels, ventilation hoods soiled and the sides of various kinds of cooking equipment was coated with heavy grease and food debris. All of the shelving had dust and food debris as did floors and walls. Ceiling tiles were missing throughout the kitchen.

Multiple employees were storing their drinks on food prep surfaces, and a coat hung over clean plates on racks near the server station.

Inspectors scored 22 restaurants B and 271 A in Greenville County in November. That includes routine inspections and follow ups.
