Hunter thought it was a deer but a 23-year-old man is dead, South Carolina officials say

A 23-year-old man was shot and killed Wednesday in “a hunting-related death,” the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said.

The hunting death happened on private property in Clarendon County, according to SCDNR.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office said the shooting occurred at about 7 a.m., near Jul Net Road, WIS-TV reported. That’s in the Manning area, not far from Exit 119 on Interstate 95.

Investigators initial findings “indicate that a duck hunter misidentified what they believed to be a deer and shot the victim,” according to SCDNR.

The coroner’s office said the victim was Skylar Anthony Julian Mckenzie, Manning Live reported.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the hunter will face any criminal charges, but the death continues to be investigated by SCDNR.
