Columbia police officer shoots armed robbery suspect
A man was shot and wounded by a Columbia Police officer Friday night after fleeing the scene of an armed robbery and firing shots at the officer, officials say.
Ibin Kenta Patterson, 45, was released from a hospital Saturday morning after being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg. He is charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and attempted murder.
Police say Patterson robbed a woman and her friend at gunpoint in the 2200 block of Santee Avenue, near Martin Luther King Jr. park, shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday. The victims were not harmed, and the suspect ran from the scene, police say.
Officers found Patterson in a field near the intersection of Taylor Street and Two Notch Road, near Providence Hospital, and upon making contact, Patterson fired several shots at an officer, police say. The officer returned fire and was not harmed during the incident.
After the exchange of gunfire, Patterson ran to the rooftop at 2368 Taylor Street and refused to surrender, police say. Additional officers, including CPD SWAT operators and a State Law Enforcement Division helicopter were called to the scene.
After more than three hours, Patterson surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody.
SLED and the Columbia Police department will investigate the officer-involved shooting. The officer has been placed on administrative duty with pay pending the outcome of the SLED investigation.
Patterson is being held at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
