Burning building causes part of busy Midlands road to be closed, SC official says

Part of a popular Lexington County road was temporarily closed Sunday morning as crews from multiple fire departments responded to a burning building, City of Cayce officials said.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the fire in the 900 block of Knox Abbott Drive was under control, but one lane of the busy road remained blocked, and officials asked drivers to avoid the area.

At about 11:15 a.m., officials said the road had been fully reopened and the scene had been cleared.

No injuries were reported in the fire at 917 Knox Abbott Drive, according to officials. That’s where the Mrs. GoodFoot nail salon is located, near Tony’s Pizzalicious in an area that’s densely packed with restaurants and retail businesses. It’s about a mile from the Blossom Street bridge and downtown Columbia.

Information about how long it took to extinguish the fire was not available, but officials said the City of Cayce Fire Department was joined by members of Lexington County Fire and the West Columbia Fire Department in battling the blaze.

There was no word about where the fire originated, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, but initial findings show it could have been an electrical fire, according to officials.

Officials said foul play was not suspected.

Information about the extent of the damages, and if the business was considered a total loss, was not available.
