A New Year’s Eve fireworks show is planned for downtown Columbia. Here’s what to know

The sky in downtown Columbia will come alive on New Year’s Eve.

The city of Columbia announced a Capital City Fireworks display for Tuesday, Dec. 31. The fireworks will begin shortly after midnight, just as 2025 arrives. City officials said in a release that the best public viewing area will be on the north side of the State House, at Gervais and Main Streets.

The city is encouraging residents and visitors to patronize restaurants and establishments in various districts in the city throughout the evening, then enjoy the fireworks at midnight.

“Columbia is a definite destination with a variety of great dining experiences and dynamic entertainment venues,” the city said in a release. “Plan to spend a fun-filled evening in the city, and then stay to watch the sky light up at midnight with vibrant colors. “

Several roads will be closed in association with the fireworks.

South Main Street between Pendleton and College streets will be shut down at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31. The road will not reopen to traffic until 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1

Pendleton Street and College Street will be closed to traffic between Assembly and Sumter streets beginning at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31. The roads will not reopen to traffic until 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1

Gervais Street along the north side of the State House between Assembly and Sumter streets will also be closed to traffic at 11 p.m. Dec. 31 for the fireworks viewing area. The street will open back up when the viewing area is cleared after the fireworks display concludes.

The city is offering free New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day parking in the Lincoln, Park, Lady and Sumter garages. The gates will be raised at those garages at 5 p.m., Dec. 31, and will return to normal operations at 2 a.m. on Jan. 2.
