Blood, grease, grime: The worst SC restaurant inspections in the Greenville area for December
Blood on a refrigerator, grease and grime in ovens and dirty sinks were among the violations found in Greenville restaurants in December.
In all, inspections were completed in 256 Greenville County restaurants, 231 received an A grade and 23 earned a B.
Two restaurants were judged C, the lowest mark South Carolina gives.
Rapid Fired Pizza on Augusta Street in Greenville scored 73, a C.
The inspector found an open employee beverage in the prep area and observed an employee not properly washing their hands. An employee did not have a hair restraint.
Soap was not provided in the kitchen or the men’s restroom and there was no sanitizer at the three-compartment kitchen sink.
A spray bottle holding some sort of chemical was not marked as were food storage containers.
The restaurant did not have a food temperature measuring device.
On a counter was a heavily soiled dry wiping cloth. On shelving in the dishwashing area were wet stacked containers. They are supposed to be air dried. Clean pizza pans were stored in a dirty container.
A soiled plastic milk crate was used to store utensils.
There was a buildup of food debris, grease and grime on equipment throughout kitchen and prep areas, including refrigerator doors, handles and gaskets, three compartment sink and prep sink.
Windy City Burgers on Coffee Street in Greenville scored 77 points, a C.
An inspector saw an employee handling burger buns with bare hands.
A potato fry cutter was encrusted with food, food containers were not clean to sight and touch and an employee washed and rinsed utensils without sanitizing the food contact surface.
Several containers of ready-to-eat foods were not labeled with prep or discard dates, including mayonnaise based salads, cooked pork belly, cooked pork loin and pimento cheese.
The menu did not include a warning about unprocessed animal foods that could contain pathogens.
Blanched french fries were stored in deep containers rather than shallow.
The three compartment sink was not clean and the solution in it was cooler than the required 110 degree temperature.
The interior of ovens had a buildup of grease and grime as did shelving, rolling racks, food storage containers, hood, hood filters, cooking equipment and refrigerators.
The floor under equipment had grease and grime as well. There was dried blood on the refrigerator.
The inspector said they did not see employees wash their hands during the inspection.
“Discussed importance of frequent and proper handwashing with person in charge,” the inspector wrote.
