“Show me a person who doesn’t like french fries and we’ll swap lies.” - Joan Lunden

Indeed, we all love french fries. Well, maybe not all of us, but most rational-thinking people, at least.

And one thing we’ve learned is that not everyone likes them the same way. Some like them floppy, some like them crispy. Some are loyal to straight-cut fries, while others prefer them crinkly. We like them salted, or with vinegar, or perhaps covered in gooey cheese. We dip them in ketchup, of course, and sometimes in barbecue sauce. There are even some people who claim to dip them in mayonnaise, though that seems a little questionable.

In Columbia and the Midlands, there are a number of restaurants where customers love to get their fry fix. Now, The State wants you to vote for your favorite french fry spot in the Midlands from a list of 17 places, selected by the newspaper’s staff, in the poll below.

Now, let’s set some ground rules. First off, we tried to keep this poll to locally owned places or very small chains, rather than include the big mega-chains. (Sorry, McDonald’s and Five Guys fans.) Also, this is a list of brick-and-mortar restaurants. (Sorry, food trucks and state fair vendors.)

And to be absolutely certain, this is not an exhaustive, comprehensive list of every restaurant in the Midlands that serves french fries. Rather, it is simply a sampling of some of the many places in the area that offer them, chosen by newspaper staffers.

You have until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, to vote in the poll below.

So vote early and vote often, and don’t forget some extra ketchup.
