A person was struck while running across Interstate 20 near the Highway 277 interchange Friday after leaving their vehicle and running across the road following a traffic stop, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Around 12 p.m. Friday, the sheriff’s department initiated the traffic stop along westbound I-20 near mile marker 74.

“The vehicle pulled over to the shoulder and an individual immediately exited the vehicle and began to run across the interstate,” the department said in a statement. The person ran into the eastbound side of the interstate, where they were hit by a vehicle, according to the sheriff’s department. The sheriff’s department was not in pursuit of the person when they were struck, the statement adds.

Earlier today, the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 in Richland County near mile marker 73 were closed following an unspecified collision. The highway patrol did not immediately provide any further details about the crash.

Traffic near mile marker 73 appeared to be at a near stand-still as of 12:22 p.m., according to traffic camera videos shared by the highway patrol. That’s near I-20’s interchange with S.C. 277, the freeway that crosses I-20 and connects Interstate 77 to downtown Columbia.

The left eastbound lane was been reopened as of 1:08 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.
