A Columbia man has been arrested and accused of abusing and torturing a dog.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department arrested Columbia’s Darius Golson, 29, and charged him with ill treatment of an animal, the sheriff’s department said in a release.

The Humane Society of South Carolina got an anonymous tip that a dog located in the 5000 block of Colonial Drive appeared to be in distress and was having trouble breathing, per the release.

A sheriff’s deputy was dispatched and found the dog dead. The release said deputies noted the dog “severely emaciated.”

The sheriff’s department investigated occupants of the residence, and Golson reportedly denied ownership of the dog, saying it belonged to a relative.

“It was ultimately determined Golson was the owner of the dog,” the release said, adding that the activity toward the dog was allegedly “intentional abuse and torture.”
