Man seen dangling off bridge before jumping onto busy Midlands road, SC sheriff says

There were multiple reports Sunday from people who saw a man dangling from a South Carolina bridge before he jumped off and landed below on a five-lane road, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The overpass at U.S. 378/Robert Graham Freeway and U.S. 15/North Main Street was the site of an attempted suicide, the sheriff’s office said Monday in a news release.

At about 3:50 p.m. Sunday, emergency dispatch received calls that a man had jumped off the bridge, according to the release.

Deputies who responded to the scene, near downtown Sumter, found that the 46-year-old man was conscious and being treated by EMS, the sheriff’s office said. The man suffered serious injuries, according to the release.

The man was airlifted to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia and was in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said. Further information on his condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about how long the incident affected traffic for drivers on the busy roads.

The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office.
