The Columbia Metropolitan Airport is adding more East Coast flights, with the low-cost Spirit Airlines announcing Wednesday three new fights from Columbia.

The discount airline known for cheap flights announced three new flights from Columbia: nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and Orlando International Airport.

The new flights to Newark and Orlando launch June 5. The Fort Lauderdale service begins June 6.

“Securing three nonstop routes on Spirit Airlines is a significant accomplishment for the airport and likewise a big win for this entire community and region,” Gregg Hornsby, Interim president and CEO of the Columbia airport, said in a statement published Wednesday.

The news comes a few months after the Columbia Airport welcomed budget airline Allegiant Air, which in November also announced new flights to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale from Columbia.

The airport is in the middle of a growth spurt, with more passengers than before, plans for a new hotel and efforts to add more gates and new technology, all with hopes of convincing more regional travellers to fly out of Columbia, rather than the larger Charlotte airport 100 miles north.

In the midst of that growth, the airport’s CEO Mike Gula suddenly resigned in December.

“His decision to resign was made amicably in coordination with the airport’s oversight commission and reflects his desire to pursue new opportunities and spend more time with his family,” a statement from the airport read at the time.

After Gula’s resignation, the airport’s chief financial officer, Hornsby, stepped in as the interim CEO.
