Three Midlands schools put on secure status after suspect fled police

Three schools in Cayce were placed on secure status Friday while police pursued a suspect they say fled on foot.

Busbee Creative Arts Academy, Cayce Elementary School and the Lexington 2 Innovation Center, located next door to each other along the 12th Street Extension, were all put on a brief secure status as officers pursued the suspect Cayce police said was under investigation for trespassing and failure to obey police commands.

He was apprehended shortly after the schools were put on secure status. No other details about the pursuit have been provided. Charges are pending, and the investigation is ongoing.

“Out of an abundance of caution, several local schools were put on [secure status] and parents were notified while the search took place,” Cayce Public Information Officer Ashley Hunter said in a statement.

Parents were notified as soon as the schools went secure, officials said.

“In an abundance of caution, Cayce Elementary, Busbee Creative Arts Academy, and the Lexington 2 Innovation Center were put on a Secure Standard Response Protocol around 11 a.m. today,” district officials said in a provided statement. “Once we received an all-clear from law enforcement, we returned to normal school day operations.”
