Sewage was spilled near a Midlands creek and neighborhood. Here’s what we know
A sewer line operated by a private utility overflowed in the Irmo area last week.
The overflow occurred Thursday night in the Friarsgate neighborhood, Blue Granite Water Company and the town of Irmo confirmed to The State.
A user posting on social media claimed to show what they said was sewage running into Rawls Creek.
A spokesperson for Blue Granite said the overflow was believed to be “very small.” The apparent cause was “an abnormal accumulation of kitchen grease that clogged a manhole,” she said.
“Our after-hours crew immediately responded to the notification and had normal flow restored within 2 hours,” said Clara Thomas, Blue Granite’s communications director. “The crew performed additional maintenance while on site to help prevent future overflows, cleaned and disinfected the area, and reported the overflow to S.C. Department of Environmental Services.”
The company could not immediately confirm if any of the runoff made it into a waterway. Thomas said customers should report any issues they notice to customer service and urged them to dispose of kitchen grease responsibility to avoid damaging the system.
“Customers can help prevent similar circumstances in the future by collecting grease and oils from cooking processes and disposing of them in the trash instead of rinsing them down the drain,” she said.
This is a developing story.
