SC man crushed by equipment at metal recycling facility, coroner says
A man was recently killed while working at a South Carolina recycling facility, according to the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.
Juan Carlos Lopez, a 23-year-old Orangeburg resident, was fatally wounded April 3, Coroner Sean Fogle said in a news release.
Lopez died at the DCC Metal Recycling facility in Holly Hill, according to the release. The facility, one of the company’s six in South Carolina that sells and buys ferrous or non-ferrous metals, is in the area of Orangeburg County between Interstate 26 and U.S. 176.
Lopez was working on a piece of equipment when part of the equipment collapsed on him, the coroner’s office said. Lopez suffered a blunt force injury to the chest and died at the scene, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about the equipment, and why it collapsed, was not available, but the coroner’s office said it’s continuing to investigate Lopez’s death, along with OSHA.
