The Lion will soon roar in a new spot near northeast Columbia.

Food Lion, which has grocery stores across numerous states, is bringing a new location to 10526 Two Notch Road in Elgin. That’s at the intersection of Two Notch and Spears Creek Church roads, about a mile east of Clemson Road.

There is signage at the site touting the coming Food Lion, and construction is underway on the property.

The Food Lion will be the anchor of the Pontiac Towne Center retail development, as noted in a listing from Reliance Realty Advisors. Aside from the grocery store, the center will have a number of other storefront spaces available. No other businesses have yet been publicly announced for the complex.

There are more than 1,100 Food Lion supermarkets across the U.S., according to data site ScrapeHero. Headquartered in North Carolina, the chain has stores in Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, West Virginia and elsewhere. There are more than a dozen Food Lion locations in the Columbia area, per the company’s website.

The new Food Lion will come to a high-traffic area. About 22,000 cars per day travel down that stretch of Two Notch, per state Department of Transportation data.

This will mark the second new grocery store coming to the Spears Creek Church Road area in Elgin in a short time period. A Publix is set to open April 30 at 185 Earth Road, at the corner of Earth and Spears Creek Church roads. That’s just more than a mile southeast of the Food Lion site.
