A 20-bed outpatient hospital has been proposed for the east side of Greenville County, an area replete with medical services including facilities owned by the area’s two major medical providers, Prisma Health and Bon Secours St. Francis Health Center.

Novant Health, a nonprofit with about 900 locations in North and South Carolina, intends to build a $132 million hospital on more than 11 acres off Patewood Drive.

The facility will have operating rooms, diagnostic imaging and services for outpatient and specialty care.

A medical office will also be constructed adjacent to the hospital.

Novant has a network of 19 hospitals, more than 750 physician clinics and urgent care centers, outpatient facilities, and imaging and pharmacy services.

“Patients don’t necessarily need to stay long-term overnight in a facility,” Ryan Lee, the president of Novant Health Greenville, said in a news release. “This gives us an attractive approach to provide care for patients. We see the future of health care growing in the outpatient setting.”

Novant Health will apply for a certificate of need from the South Carolina Department of Public Health in the next few months with completion of the hospital expected in 2027.

Lee comes to the Upstate from Novant Health Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, where he was president. He also held chief executive officer positions for healthcare facilities in Florida and Virginia.

He is a business graduate of Clemson University and earned a master’s in health administration at the Medical University of South Carolina.

“This opportunity is especially meaningful to me, as it brings us closer to family and lifelong friends in the region,” he said.

Novant’s news release said the company plans additional projects and services but did not say specifically what they were.

Novant Health bought East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant last year and also owns Hilton Head Medical Center on Hilton Head Island, Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville and 27 associated physician clinics. The company is upgrading operating rooms and expanding emergency departments, the news release said.

Also located in the Patewood area of Greenville County is Prisma Health Patewood, a short-stay hospital for orthopedic and OB/GYN services as well as other outpatient specialty programs and doctor’s offices.

St. Francis Eastside is a 93-bed hospital with two medical office buildings with an emergency room, labor and delivery, Neonatal Care Unit, orthopedic surgery, among other medical services.
