The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a body was found Friday in a creek that runs under Decker Boulevard in northeast Columbia.

The body was recovered Friday afternoon in Jackson Creek, near the intersection of Decker Boulevard and O’Neil Court, the sheriff’s department said in a statement. That’s not far from the old Decker Mall building, which now houses Richland County Central Magistrate Court, a sheriff’s department annex and a community room for public events.

Deputies responded to the scene shortly after noon when a passerby called to report seeing a body in the creek.

The Columbia Fire Department and EMS also responded to the creek to render emergency aid, if necessary, but the individual was already dead, the department said.

The Richland County coroner has yet to identify the body.
