An iconic building in downtown Columbia is set to once again be home to a store.

The Shoppes at Tapps, which will be a “boutique department store” with 11,000 square feet of curated retail space, plans to open on the main level of the Tapp’s Building at 1644 Main St., according to a Tuesday release from LTC Hospitality. That’s at the southeast corner of Main and Blanding streets.

The historic Tapp’s building was home to Tapp’s Department Store for decades during the 20th century. That department store closed in 1995, according to Historic Columbia. The building was later rehabilitated and includes apartments on the upper floors.

The Shoppes at Tapps will “offer a sophisticated environment for high-end retailers looking to establish or expand a brick-and-mortar presence,” LTC Hospitality said in a release.

LTC Hospitality is a well-known player in the Main Street District whose portfolio includes nearby restaurants such as Smoked, 1624 Bistro, The Grand on Main and Hanabi Hibachi & Sushi.

The Tuesday release said retail brand Icon will occupy about 3,000 square feet of the main level, with the additional space available for other retailers. Retail spaces will be available for lease at $4 per square foot per month, with 10% of sales used to support shared staffing and operational expenses, LTC said in the release.

Once it debuts in July, the Shoppes at Tapps will operate from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Additionally, LTC Hospitality noted the basement level of the Tapp’s building will be home to 24-7 Gym. It is described in a release as “a modern fitness facility equipped with brand-new machines, group fitness areas, and studio space with independent HVAC systems — ideal for hot yoga, cycling, and specialty classes.” 24-7 Gym memberships start at $25 per month.
