A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car while crossing U.S. 1/Augusta Road in West Columbia, a busy stretch of road just off Interstate 26.

Zackary Ryan Rose, a 30-year-old man from Lexington County, died after being struck by a car April 30, county Coroner Margaret Fisher confirmed in a press release. Rose died at the scene as a result of his injuries, the release said. The driver of the car that hit him was uninjured.

Rose was hit along the 2800 block of Augusta Road, according to the release. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Rose was using a crosswalk, but very few pedestrian crosswalks exist along the four-lane route that drops drivers off Interstate 26 to a slew of chain restaurants and big box retail stores.

The area right near the crash, from Jarvis Klapman Boulevard to the I-26 ramps, saw 35,100 each daily on average in 2024, according to state Department of Transportation traffic counts. The area where Rose was killed sits in the middle of ongoing construction, which began in the fall of last year. Changes to that area are set to include added safety measures like new medians, crosswalks and traffic lights.

South Carolina was second in the nation for number of pedestrian deaths in 2020, according to DOT.

This is a developing story.
