A popular Peruvian tapas restaurant near northeast Columbia is planning to close next month.

Ratio, which is located at 566 Spears Creek Church Road in Elgin, will be closing after its dinner service on June 28, according to a post from owner/chef Javier Uriarte on the restaurant’s Facebook page. Uriarte is a well-known restaurateur on the Midlands culinary scene, and was a SC Chef Ambassador in 2024, a program in which top chefs are called upon to advocate for the state’s agricultural and dining traditions.

“After nearly five unforgettable years, it’s time for us to say goodbye — for now,” Uriarte wrote in the Ratio social media post. “Our last dinner service at Ratio will be Saturday, June 28. This wasn’t a decision made lightly. With our lease coming to a close, and as life evolves, so do my priorities. I began Ratio as a newlywed and am now a father of two and ready to embrace a new season of life — one that allows space for rest, family, and reflection.”

The chef said in the post that Ratio has been “a gathering place, a platform for creativity, and a love letter to Peruvian flavors and craft hospitality.”

Ratio has been known for its tapas menu. For instance, it offers a pork belly chicharron, which comes with sweet potato, salsa criolla, huancaina and crispy onion.

The Thursday social media post noted that, while the Ratio location in Elgin is coming to a close, there is a possibility for something new in the future.

“While the restaurant may be closing its physical doors, Ratio isn’t going anywhere — not in spirit, not in heart, and not in purpose,” the post said. “This chapter doesn’t mark the end. Ratio will continue to live on in new ways — maybe as a new location, a fresh concept, or something entirely unexpected. Time will tell.

“For now, we’re still here, available for catering, private events, pop-ups, and creative collaborations.”

Ratio will be open Wednesday through Saturday until June 28, the social media post indicated.
