Who had Columbia’s favorite hot dogs in The State’s poll? Check out the winner
Break out the chili and mustard. A winner has been crowned in The State’s 2025 Hot Dog Poll.
B&S One Stop, located at 1823 Superior St. in Columbia, not far from Rosewood Drive, emerged victorious in the recent poll, which asked readers to choose from a list of 16 different hot dog places from across the Midlands. More than 2,600 votes were cast in the poll and, when the smoke cleared, B&S One Stop led the way with 25% of the votes. West Columbia’s City Limits Barbeque came in second with 20% of the votes, while Rush’s was third with 14%.
Tucked away in a small, unassuming white brick building not far from the University of South Carolina’s campus, B&S One Stop has been open for about four years. Owners Ben Chestnut and Sherry Myers — they are collectively the “B&S” of the shop’s name — can often be found working the register and kitchen of the small shop, which specializes in hot dogs, but also offers sodas, beer, candy and other items.
“Ben loves to cook,” Myers told The State in a recent interview. “That’s his signature. We always wanted a store. We found this store a few years ago and it took off from there, serving our hot dogs and helping the community. That’s the number one goal, besides just being a store, is helping the community and growing the community.”
Chestnut said, through the course of the last several years, the store has been starting to find its groove.
“We started off with the hot dogs, during COVID times,” Chestnut said. “It was hard, and we used our own money and did everything. We kept going and going, and everything worked out.”
In the last several years, B&S has been something of a secret that has been slipping out more and more. It’s the definition of a neighborhood joint, a place where city workers, nearby residents and many others come for a dog and something cold to drink.
Myers said it has been fun to see people discover B&S.
“When they get here, sometimes it’s not what they expected,” Myers said, with a laugh. “I had one customer who was talking about the hot dogs, and she was talking about the store not looking like it would be for hot dogs. But when you come in here, it’s the hot dog spot.”
Chestnut and Myers were elated to learn B&S had won The State’s recent poll.
“We’ve been at this for four years,” Myers said. “This year and last year have been our busiest years. Things have been picking up and we are just excited.”
