A new spot for discount items is coming to a popular shopping center in Columbia.

Dollar Tree, which has stores across the U.S. and the Midlands, will open a new location in the Shoppes at Woodhill shopping center at 6090 Garners Ferry Road. The discount store will be going into the space that formerly was home to Party City, which closed earlier this year.

There is a banner hanging on the store front that says a Dollar Tree is “coming soon,” and a city of Columbia building permit for Dollar Tree is hanging in the window. Construction and prep work were ongoing when a reporter briefly went by Thursday morning.

Dollar Tree has more than 8,700 stores across the nation, according to data site ScrapeHero. There are 20 locations in the greater Columbia area, per a store locator tool on the company’s website. While most of the items at Dollar Tree are priced at $1.25, it also offers some products in the $3 to $5 range.

The Shoppes at Woodhill plaza has continued to be a busy retail area in Columbia, and features national brands such as Target, World Market, Jimmy John’s, Barnes & Noble and others. About 48,000 cars per day pass down that stretch of Garners Ferry Road, making it one of the most high-traffic corridors in the city.
