Sewer overflow causes erosion, closes Midlands riverwalk

Facebook screen grab

A sewer overflow has closed down a portion of a Midlands riverwalk over Memorial Day weekend.

The city of Cayce announced Saturday that the overflow happened Saturday near the riverwalk, apparently because of a forcemain failure, the city said in a post on Facebook.

The riverwalk is closed between Naples Avenue and Kelley Jones Park, approximately a mile and a half.

The Congaree Riverkeeper said several thousand gallons of overflow caused “significant erosion” of the boardwalk area and wold require “substantial repairs.”

Other portions of the trail remain open, the city said.
