A well known downtown Columbia florist and gift shop will soon close its doors after decades in business.

Something Special Florist and Gifts, located at 1546-C Main St., announced Tuesday on Facebook that it will be closing on June 28 after 40 years in business, citing the retirement of its owners.

“It has been our greatest honor to be part of your weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and celebrations of life,” the shop said in its social media post. “Every bouquet we created carried a piece of our heart, and we’re endlessly thankful for the trust you placed in us to make your moments even more special.

“While this chapter is coming to a close, we’ll continue to offer our services for private events on a limited basis. It’s not goodbye, just a new way to keep sharing what we love.”

The Main Street District, which represents property owners and businesses in the downtown core, lauded Something Special in a Tuesday Facebook post of its own.

“A Main Street District icon is closing their doors for a well-deserved retirement,” the district posted on social media. “Thank you for 40 years of making occasions and homes more beautiful, Something Special Florist and Gifts!”

Something Special, which is located between the Prohibition bar and Drake’s Duck-In restaurant along Main Street, has long been a go-to shop for flower arrangements and a wide assortment of gifts and specialties. The florist is especially known for its ornate, beautifully decorated window displays, particularly around various holidays. It has been common, especially at Christmastime, to see youngsters and others standing outside the shop and gazing at the decorations inside the front window.

“Thank you for 40 years of memories, laughter, and community,” the shop said on Facebook. “You’ve been our inspiration every step of the way.”
