South Carolina health inspectors found multiple violations at restaurants in the Upstate in May, from roaches found in a pot on the stove to cooked chicken stored on the floor and workers handling cooked food with their bare hands. The state each month releases grades and inspection reports for food establishments across Upstate counties.
Here are the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in May.
Bamboo Garden at 209 Hwy 28 Bypass in Anderson
Bamboo Garden had an inspection on May 13 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed live roaches in the kitchen near the cook line. Roaches were also found in a stock pot on the stove.
An employee was seen touching their face and then not washing hands before returning to food production. The back door was seen not sealed properly and parts of the screen were broken. Multiple pots and containers were seen with an accumulation of grime and buildup.
Certain foods were seen not kept at proper cooling temperatures.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection and got an A grade.
Habiba Mediterranean Restaurant in Greenville
Habiba Mediterranean Restaurant had an inspection on May 5 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed a buildup of black microbial growth inside the ice machine.
Raw shelled eggs were seen stored above limes and lemons in the walk-in cooler. Large, deep containers full of cooked chicken wings were seen being cooled improperly on the countertop and the walk-in cooler. The back door was seen left wide open.
Cooked chicken was seen stored on the floor of the kitchen. A buildup of debris was seen on the floors and floor drains in the facility.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on May 7 and got an A grade.
Menkoi Udon & Soba House at 241-B N Main Street in Greenville
Menkoi Udon & Soba House had an inspection on May 22 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed an accumulation of soil and biofilm in the ice machine. Several containers of ready to eat foods were seen not labeled with proper discard date. Chemicals were seen stored above food prep area. Torn aluminum foil and dried food debris were seen on shelving in the walk-in cooler. Floors were seen soiled with food debris, grease and grime.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on May 30 and got an A grade.
Cod Tail of Greenwood at 239 Bypass 72 NW in Greenwood
Cod Tail of Greenwood had an inspection on May 29 and got a C grade. An inspector observed multiple containers of flour, bags of rice that were not covered properly.
A person unnecessary to the food retail establishment operation was seen in the food prep area. Multiple people were seen handling cooked potatoes with bare hands. Multiple raw foods were seen stored above ready to eat foods in the walk-in cooler. A heavy accumulation of food and grime buildup was seen under prep units and near prep unit doors.
A required followup inspection has not yet been held.
Montague Hibachi and Wings at 910 Montague Ave. in Greenwood
Montague Hibachi and Wings had an inspection on May 29 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed employee handling raw chicken then touch multiple items in the kitchen without washing hands.
The hand sink was seen being used for purposes other than hand washing. Multiple cutting boards were seen unclean to sight and touch. Three large containers of rice were seen not allowed to cool properly overnight. A raw chicken box was seen used to store salmon in the freezer.
A required followup inspection has not yet been held.
K-Pop B.W.F. at 113 Blackstock Rd. in Spartanburg
K-Pop B.W.F. had an inspection on May 28 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed only partially cooked wings at the prep table.
Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Employees were seen not washing hands after changing gloves. The walk-in freezer was seen with a temperature of 50 degrees. A buildup of organic material was seen on hood filters and walls around the fryer.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on May 29 and got a B grade. A second followup inspection has not yet been held.
