Feel the boom: Columbia, Lexington to have fireworks July 4 week. Here’s where

If you like to see explosions across the sky, you’re in luck in the Midlands.

The Fourth of July holiday is around the corner, and many people are getting ready to celebrate the occasion with fireworks.

Now, for some that might mean visiting an area fireworks store such as Casey’s Fireworks on Rosewood Drive, or perhaps one of the many roadside stands that proliferate across the area this time of year. Nothing says “South Carolina in the summertime” quite like a fireworks stand posted up in a gas station parking lot.

But let’s be honest: Though you may love a little backyard pyrotechnic celebration, you really might want to just leave it to the pros. And there are a number of ways you can do that this year.

There are Independence Day celebrations across the Midlands in the days surrounding July 4, and on the day itself. A sampling of some of the bigger bashes is detailed below. So find a show, be safe, and have a good holiday.

Lake Murray’s Independence Day Celebration (June 28)

The Midlands Independence Day fireworks extravaganzas will get going with a party on the lake.

What is billed by Capital City/Lake Murray Country as South Carolina’s largest fireworks show is set for Saturday, June 28. It will be the 37th annual Independence Day celebration at the lake. Fireworks will be shot at approximately 9:30 p.m. from two locations — Spence Island and Dreher Island. The show is synced to patriotic music that will play on 93.1 FM, and WIS will have a livestream of the fireworks on its website.

Organizers say that the best place to view fireworks will be by boat or from Dreher Island State Park. Normal fees will apply for the state park, which are $3 for adults, $1.50 for senior citizens and $1 for kids age 6 to 15.

Fireworks with the Phil at Segra Park (July 3)

If you like your explosives with a classical music twist, this is the show for you.

The South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra is set for its annual Fireworks with the Phil concert on Thursday, July 3 at the Columbia Fireflies’ Segra Park in the BullStreet District. (Originally scheduled for July 2, it was moved due to weather forecasts.)

Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. with the show starting at 8 p.m. The orchestra will play patriotic songs and other popular selections, and then there will be an extended fireworks show accompanied by the “1812 Overture.”

Advance tickets are available through the Columbia Fireflies website and start at $10. The concession stands at the stadium will be open throughout the event.

Lexington County Blowfish baseball games (July 3 and 4)

Baseball and the Fourth of July have always gone well together.

For those who want to mix both of these symbols of Americana, the Lexington County Blowfish Coastal Plain League baseball team, which plays on Ballpark Road, is planning a pair of games with fireworks afterward. At 7:05 p.m. Thursday, July 3 the Blowfish will host the Boone Bigfoots on Red, White and Blue Night, then at 7:05 p.m. Friday, July 4 they will take on the “Glowfish” in an intra-squad contest on We Love America Night. The July 4 game will be a 7-inning affair with a two-hour time limit, so you won’t have to wait long for those fireworks.

Tickets are available at goblowfishbaseball.com or at the box office at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

Columbia Fireflies baseball games at Segra Park (July 4 and 5)

The neon of the Fireflies won’t be the only thing glowing in the skies over BullStreet.

The Class A Fireflies, an affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, have a pair of fireworks games on tap for Independence Day weekend. They will play the Augusta GreenJackets, an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5, with fireworks immediately after each game. The July 5 game also doubles as Marvel Superhero Night, with a free comic book for the first 1,000 fans.

Tickets are available at columbiafireflies.com or at the Segra Park box office.

Lexington County Peach Festival in Gilbert (July 4)

As ever, things will be just peachy in Gilbert on Independence Day.

The long-running Lexington County Peach Festival will run throughout the day Friday, July 4 at Gilbert Community Park, with a car show, vendors, food and more. Then at 9:15 p.m., the day will conclude with a large fireworks show.

Organizers say the fireworks will be visible from the open fields at Gilbert Community Park, Gilbert Middle School, and Gilbert Elementary School.

Independence Day Celebration at Icehouse Amphitheater (July 4)

The skies will light up over downtown Lexington.

The town of Lexington’s celebration will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, July 4 at the Icehouse Amphitheater with a concert from the 246th Army Band. Fireworks are slated to begin at about 9:20 p.m. Food, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Town officials say the best fireworks viewing areas include the Icehouse Amphitheater, Main Street restaurants, Lexington Square Park, Lexington Veterans Monument and any public parking lot in the downtown area. The circle and grass parking lots located along S. Church Street will be closed all day, and Virginia Hylton Park will close at 6 p.m.

Fourth of July Celebration at Fort Jackson (July 4)

One of the nation’s leading Army training installations is set for its annual Independence Day Bash.

The celebration will be from 4 to 9 p.m. and there will be live music, food trucks, amusement rides and, of course, fireworks. The event will be held on Hilton Field and musical acts include the 282D Army Band, Aden Webb, Syr and DJ B-Sam.
