This busy Columbia area has a new place for ice cream treats. Check out where
As the summer temperatures rise, there’s a new spot for cold treats in northeast Columbia.
Dulce Losa Ice Cream Factory recently opened its doors at 1400 Summit Parkway. That’s near the Food Lion in a shopping center just off busy Hard Scrabble Road. Dulce Losa is located in a space that formerly was home to a Smoothie King.
The new ice cream shop has more than two dozen flavors, with treats offered in cups or cones, as well as milkshakes. The traditional flavors are available — chocolate, strawberry, etc. — as well as specialty flavors such as Superman, apple strudel, birthday cake and more. The shop also offers various candy and fruit toppings, free of charge, for the ice cream.
Dulce Losa was opened by two couples, Will Taylor and Tammy Johnson, and Mike and Jennifer Campbell, according to Johnson.
The ice cream shop was bright and welcoming when a reporter stopped by Tuesday afternoon. Walls in the store are painted in the white-and-black pattern of a cow, and there are posters along the walls depicting cows playing basketball while wearing the jerseys of local high school teams, such as Ridge View, Blythewood, Westwood and others. The posters give the bovine basketballers names such as “LeBarn James,” “Carmoolo Anthony” and “Shaquille O’Veal.”
Johnson, who also works as a Realtor, said she is enjoying the shop’s location in a busy part of northeast Columbia, not far from Ridge View High School. It’s a high-traffic area, with nearly 22,000 cars per day traveling down nearby Hard Scrabble Road, per state Department of Transportation statistics.
“It’s a great location,” Johnson said. “It’s exactly what we were looking for. ... Everybody seems to love the ice cream. I’ve had people come back two or three times in a single day. ... It’s great when everyone’s happy.”
Dulce Losa is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
