The Midlands may see rain showers and gusty winds starting the night of July 5, but the National Weather Service expects “minimal impact” to the area, according to a report on Tropical Storm Chantal issued this morning by NWS Columbia SC.

The weather service issued a Lake Wind Advisory from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 5, with winds expected to reach between 20 and 30 mph across the region, but no tropical hazards are expected for the Central South Carolina and the Central Savannah River areas, according to the report.

The far eastern Midlands and Pee Dee are most likely to see heavy rain on July 6. These two regions may also see winds of up to 35 mph that day.

There is currently no threat of tornadoes, and the NWS is confident that the tropical storm will not strengthen to a hurricane, the report read.

The storm received its designation as a tropical storm around 8 a.m. Saturday. Before then, the NWS called it Tropical Depression 3.

This is a developing story.
