Two dead, two injured in weekend boat crash on SC lake, authorities say

Two people have died and two more were injured in a boat crash on Lake Greenwood.

The South Carolina Department of Natural resources said in a release on social media platform X that officers responded on Sunday, July 6 after two vessels collided on the lake, which is about 70 miles northwest of Columbia.

Officials said an Alumacraft boat carrying five people was struck from behind by a Yamaha boat with two people on board. SCDNR said in its post that two occupants from the Alumacraft boat were killed, and two others were taken to an area hospital with injuries. The incident happened at about 1:42 a.m. Sunday.

The operator of the Yamaha boat 37-year old Allen Sidney Benware Jr. III — was arrested and charged with two counts of felony boating under the influence, SCDNR said. The names of the deceased had not been released as of late Sunday morning.

The Department of Natural Resources said the crash remains under investigation.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” SCDNR said in its release.
