A $3.7 million bridge replacement near Greenville’s Unity Park has been delayed due to right of way acquisitions.

The project is expected to get underway in August after the School District of Greenville County approved a selling a 0.028-acre strip adjacent to A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School to the South Carolina Department of Transportation for $50,000.

The original bridge was among 10 damaged by the remnants of Hurricane Helene as the then tropical storm blew through the Upstate last September, killing seven people.

Hudson Street Bridge connects the Southernside community, Unity Park and AJ Whittenburg Elementary School.

Hannah Robinson, the media relations manager for SCDOT, said the existing bridge will be demolished and the new bridge will have wider lanes and sidewalks.

The project will take about eight months.
