Growing area near Columbia to get a new location of this national sandwich chain
A well-known national sub shop is set to open a new location near northeast Columbia.
Firehouse Subs, which has locations across the U.S., will open a location at 572 Spears Creek Church Road in Elgin. That’s just west of Interstate 20, across the street from a QT convenience store and the Scoop of Heaven ice cream shop. The Firehouse will be next door to a Valvoline oil change shop that opened earlier this summer.
An opening date for the Elgin Firehouse hasn’t been publicly announced, though the business appears nearly ready. Personnel were inside working on the dining room space when a reporter peeked in on Tuesday. The location was not yet listed on the store locator tool on the company’s website as of Wednesday morning.
There are more than 1,200 Firehouse Subs restaurants across the U.S., per data website ScrapeHero. That includes numerous locations in South Carolina, and nearly a dozen in the Columbia and Lexington areas.
The company is known for its hot sandwiches with names that are a nod to firefighting, such as the signature Hook and Ladder, which comes with smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, melted Monterey Jack cheese, mayo, deli mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a kosher dill pickle on the side. The sub shops are also known for their hot sauce bars, including the Firehouse Captain Sorensen’s Datil Pepper Hot Sauce.
The Elgin store will be the third Firehouse in the greater northeast Columbia area, following locations at Killian Crossing and at the Sparkleberry Square shopping center. It will be in an increasingly busy commercial corridor, as about 10,000 cars per day travel down that stretch of Spears Creek Church Road, per SC Department of Transportation data. About 68,000 cars per day travel down Interstate 20 nearby.
