A national department store chain is planning a new location in a busy Columbia area.

Burlington, which is known for its discounts on name brand clothing, is prepping a new store at 6880 Garners Ferry Road. The store will be in a space that was formerly home to a Big Lots, in a shopping center across the road from the Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

There is a banner on the building at 6880 Garners Ferry announcing that the Burlington is “coming soon.” City of Columbia records indicate that permits have been issued for the Burlington project. An opening date for the store has not been publicly announced. Construction work was going on inside the space when a reporter recently peeked in the window.

Burlington has purchased the leases of a few dozen former Big Lots locations across the U.S. in the last year, including the Garners Ferry Road site, according to published reports.

There are more than 1,100 Burlington locations across the U.S., according to data site ScrapeHero. There are three Burlington stores currently in the Midlands, including one on Fashion Drive in northeast Columbia, one at Dutch Square Center mall and one on Sunset Boulevard in Lexington.

Burlington carries clothing for men, women and kids, as well as personal care products, home office goods, some electronics and more. It was formerly known as “Burlington Coat Factory” but has been known simply as Burlington for several years now.

Garners Ferry Road is a very high-traffic corridor lined with restaurants, stores and various other businesses. More than 48,000 cars per day travel the section of Garners Ferry near Dorn VA hospital, according to state Department of Transportation data, making it one of the busiest non-interstate roads in the Midlands.
