These are the best hospitals in SC for 2025, US News & World Report says. Here’s why they’re great
The Medical University of South Carolina is the state’s best hospital overall, according to new rankings from U.S. News and World Report.
This is the 11th consecutive year the Charleston hospital has been No. 1.
MUSC was nationally ranked in one adult and four pediatric specialties and rated high performing in three adult specialties and 16 procedures and conditions, the magazine said.
Some 5,000 hospitals are evaluated each year based on surveys given to patients after leaving the hospital by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, the magazine said.
The magazine ranking is intended to help consumers find the facilities that are doing the best caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients.
Two Midlands hospitals ranked in the top 9 for South Carolina. Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia was No. 2, a tie with Roper Hospital in Charleston, and Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia was No. 9.
MUSC’s evaluation also included data from Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of South Carolina at MUSC, which ranked high in a number of national rankings. That includes No. 2 best in the nation for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery, No. 24 in pediatric nephrology, No. 30 in pediatric gastroenterology and No. 38 in the treatment of pediatric cancer.
The adult hospital was ranked No. 16 in the nation for obstetrics and gynecology.
MUSC specialties ranked as high performing for treatment of neurology and neurosurgery, heart attack, heart arrhythmia, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, pacemaker implantation, diabetes, colon cancer surgery, back surgery (spinal fusion), stroke, gynecological cancer surgery, maternity care (uncomplicated pregnancy), hip replacement, lung cancer surgery and urology
Lexington Medical Center was rated high performing in 15 adult procedures and conditions.
That includes leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, colon cancer surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, heart attack, heart arrhythmia, heart bypass surgery, pacemaker implantation, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), back surgery, maternity care (uncomplicated pregnancy), hip fracture, knee replacement, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and prostate cancer surgery.
Lexington hospital earned 4 out of 5 stars for patient satisfaction.
Prisma Health Richland Hospital rated high performing in eight adult procedures and conditions. It also rated high in the treatment of gynecological cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, heart attack, heart failure, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), kidney failure and stroke.
Patients rated their experience as 3 out of 5.
The other South Carolina hospitals ranked highest were:
#2 Roper Hospital in Charleston was nationally ranked in rehabilitation at No. 36, and rated high performing in 15 adult procedures and conditions.
#4 Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, high performing in 13 adult procedures and conditions.
#5 Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, high performing in nine adult procedures and conditions. The evaluation also includes data from Marshall I. Pickens Hospital, GHS Children’s Hospital and Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital.
#5 Spartanburg Medical Center in Spartanburg, high performing in 10 adult procedures and conditions and includes data from Spartanburg Medical Center - Mary Black.
#5 Trident Medical Center in Charleston, high performing in eight adult procedures and conditions and includes data from Moncks Corner Medical Center, Summerville Medical Center and Live Oak Mental Health and Wellness.
