Seventy-five years ago, Harmon Dobson sold his first Whataburger from a stand in Corpus Christi, Texas.

To celebrate that day, the San Antonio, Texas based chain with 1,151 restaurants in 17 states will offer a number of celebrations, including a 75-cent Whataburger classic. That is the original — two beef patties, lettuce, tomato, pickles, diced onions, and mustard, on a toasted bun and the price is good for those who order through the company’s app or online.

They’re calling Aug. 8 — Friday — National Whataburger Day.

Whataburger has 16 restaurants in South Carolina — Anderson, Boiling Springs, Duncan, Easley, Greenwood, Indian Land, Irmo and Mauldin as well as two each in Columbia, Greenville, Lexington and Spartanburg.

The company will open locations in Simpsonville, and Greenville before the end of the year.

“This year’s celebration is bigger, better and beefier than ever,” the company said in a news release.

Other offers are the second collection of limited-edition Whataburger Commemorative Cups and a celebration in Corpus Christi at Whataburger Field for a game between the Hooks and the Tulsa Drillers.

The first 1,500 fans receive a limited-edition Whataguy mask, and the first 5,000 will get a Whataguy cape.

“Whataburger’s story has always been one about people — the fans who’ve made us part of their everyday moments, the Family Members who serve every meal with care and pride, and the communities that have welcomed us like family for 75 years,” said Whataburger President and CEO Debbie Stroud.

Dobson died in a crash of a private plane in 1967, and his wife Grace took over the company. By the time she died in 2005 at age 80, the company had grown to 600 stores.

The family sold its majority interest in the company in 2019 to Chicago-based investment firm BDT Capital, which after a 20-year hiatus, started pushing for franchise operators.

The company website says to become a franchisee, a person needs $1.2 million cash, a minimum net worth of $12.5 million and commit to opening at least five locations in five years.

Whataburger is open 24 hours every day except on Christmas Day.

Whataburger is not to be confused with the locally owned What-a-Burger.
