This longtime Columbia-area restaurant has closed its doors. What to know
A restaurant that had been part of the Midlands dining scene for more than three decades has closed its doors.
Shoney’s, which has locations in a number of states, recently closed the location at 2208-B Airport Boulevard in the town of Springdale, near West Columbia and Cayce. The restaurant was located just west of Interstate 26, next door to a Sleep Inn hotel and across the street from a Sonic Drive-In.
The Airport Boulevard Shoney’s is no longer listed on the locations page of the company’s website, and the chain’s logo has been taken off the front of the building.
“Closed,” the restaurant’s roadside marquee read as of the morning of Aug. 12. “Thanks for a great 35 years.”
The Shoney’s location at 7335 Garners Ferry Road in Columbia remains open. It is the last remaining Shoney’s in the Columbia area.
Founded in 1947, Shoney’s was once a ubiquitous presence on the American dining landscape, and even once boasted an ad campaign with TV star Andy Griffith. There are now fewer than 60 Shoney’s locations across the country.
Through the years Shoney’s restaurants have been known for their breakfast bar, burgers, and a dessert menu highlighted by a hot fudge cake.
