Flights in Columbia delayed, diverted after plane breaks down on runway
Passengers saw their flights delayed and diverted in Columbia as both of the runways at Columbia Metropolitan Airport were closed after a plane broke down after landing Tuesday afternoon.
“Due to this incident, CAE cannot operate as regularly scheduled - this includes arrivals and departures,” the airport said in a release.
After a small general aviation aircraft became disabled after landing at the small regional airport around 1:30 p.m., causing the airport to lose both of its two runways, the disabled plane was removed and flights resumed as of 3:45 p.m. No injuries have been reported.
The airport’s other runway is closed due to construction, according to the initial release.
At least four flights headed for Columbia’s airport were diverted, as of 3:15 p.m., to other cities and at least 10 flights set to depart were delayed, according to the airport’s website.
“After a full inspection, the runway has been cleared to restart operations. At this time, there is no information as to the cause of the aircraft becoming disabled,” a spokesperson for CAE said in a statement.
This is a developing story.
