Sumter schools superintendent resigns after three years
Sumter School District Superintendent William Wright resigned three years after beginning the role, the school board announced Thursday evening.
The resignation comes as the district faces an investigation from the state Inspector General’s office over mismanagement of funds. The investigation is currently ongoing, South Carolina Inspector General Brian Lamkin confirmed Friday morning.
It is not clear why Wright resigned.
Wright’s resignation is effective immediately, according to a statement from Shawn Ragin, chairman of the Sumter school board. Wright asked to leave the district Thursday evening, just two weeks since the beginning of the school year.
Shirley Gamble, the Sumter School District’s chief of schools, will take over the role while the school board hires an interim and permanent superintendent, according to the statement.
