A growing ice cream shop brand is planning a location in Columbia.

Crispy Cones, which has locations in a number of states across the U.S., is headed to the capital city. There is a banner hanging at 1204 Main St., not far from Gervais Street and the South Carolina Statehouse, announcing that the ice cream shop is “coming soon.” Public records indicate the city of Columbia issued a permit for the coming soon banner in late July.

Social media posts from Crispy Cones in July trumpeted that the company was bringing a shop to Columbia, though those posts didn’t indicate the exact location. An estimated opening timeframe for a Columbia shop has not been publicly announced.

“Get ready to taste the viral sensation — sweet, hand-rolled cones filled with creamy soft serve and stacked with your favorite toppings!,” Crispy Cones said in an Instagram post touting a Columbia outpost.

Crispy Cones has generated buzz as it has grown, particularly through a segment on the hit ABC TV show “Shark Tank,” in which celebrity investors hear pitches from burgeoning companies. Crispy Cone shops are known for their ice cream and toppings that are served in specially made cones.

“A Crispy Cone is a fresh dough cone, grilled rotisserie-style and covered with cinnamon + sugar or a specialty powder,” the company says on its website. “The cone is filled with your choice of spread, gourmet soft-serve ice cream, fruit, and a variety of delicious toppings. We are revolutionizing the soft serve cone.”

There are Crispy Cone locations in a number of states, including Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Idaho, Utah, Pennsylvania and elsewhere. The only other location currently in South Carolina is on Woodruff Road in Greenville.

The Main Street area north of the Statehouse has continued to be a bustling section of the capital city, lined with restaurants, shops, hotels, apartments, the Nickelodeon movie theater, the Columbia Museum of Art and more. The area near 1204 Main St. is a high traffic corridor, with about 31,000 cars per day traveling down nearby Gervais Street, according to state Department of Transportation data.
