A grand opening has been set for a new Columbia restaurant offering flavors of Hawaii and Japan.

Surfin Sumo, a Hawaiian fusion spot, will have a grand opening at noon on Aug. 28 at 1211 Taylor St., in the downtown Main Street District, according to a release from the city of Columbia. A number of city officials, including Mayor Daniel Rickenmann and Main Street District chief Matt Kennell, as well as retaurant personnel are set to be on hand.

The new restaurant, which is offering “Hawaiian fusion flavors with a Japanese twist” per the release, is located in the space that formerly was home to Sandwich Depot.

“We wanted to bring the spirit of the islands to Columbia,” Surfin Sumo said in the release. “It’s all about good food, good vibes, and serving this amazing community we’re lucky to be part of.”

Surfin Sumo will offer, among other things, slow-cooked Kalua pork and creamy Hawaiian-style mac salad. Online menus show a number of entrees, including beef bulgogi, grilled garlic shrimp, crispy garlic chicken and more. Plates are served with a choice of shoyu or fried rice and a choice of mac salad or grilled veggies.

The Main Street District in downtown remains a vibrant corridor, lined with shops, restaurants, bars, hotels, apartments, city and business offices, the Nickelodeon Theater, the Columbia Museum of Art and more. About 22,000 cars per day travel down Taylor Street near Surfin Sumo, according to state Department of Transportation statistics.
