This SC home for $4.8M was built with parts of an historic courthouse from the 1800s. Take a look
A house overlooking Greenville’s Cleveland Park dates back to 1928, but some of its pieces go back much farther — to the 1800s when the original Greenville County Courthouse was built.
When what was then known as the Old Records Building was demolished in 1924, Duke executive Wilbur Ellis had someone gather up stone and the columns and take them to the house he was building.
He used the rock for the entranceway, placed the columns and installed the solid oak door and named the house Greystone.
It is on the market for the first time in 20 years. The listing price is $4.8 million.
Less than a mile from downtown Greenville, the Colonial Revival house at 48 Ridgeland Way has five bedrooms, five baths and is 7,145 square feet.
Listing agent Linda O’Brien of Coldwell Banker Caine/Williams describes it as “a historic gem in the heart of Greenville.”
It’s been owned by three families over the past 100 years, most recently by William Kellett IV, son of beloved longtime OB-GYN William Kellett III, who died in 2016.
The entrance hallway features the original hardwood floors, and all hardwood floors were refinished when the current owner bought the house in 2005. What the listing describes as the quietest room in the house was once the formal living room, but is now a TV and sitting room. It has one of several fireplaces and 10-foot ceilings, extensive wainscoting, plaster molding and bookcases.
The formal dining room also has extensive wainscoting, heavy moldings and the original glass chandelier.
Back in the back, Ellis and his friends enjoyed playing cards, smoking cigars and sipping bourbon in what was then called the gentleman’s parlor, the current owner said in the history of the house.
The Kelletts used it as an art room and library. It has wood paneling, slate flooring, hand-hewn dentil molding and bookcases. Four magnificent Palladian windows and the door overlook the pool.
The Ellis original kitchen is now a morning room with a sitting area, lighted glass display cabinetry and gas log fireplace with original copper awning.
The kitchen was gutted in 2014 and “renovated with custom Quartzite counter tops, new lighting and sound as well as Thermodore gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher,” the listing says.
The Family Room has a U-shaped couch, large screen tv with an integrated sound system and a wood burning fireplace with a teak mantle.
A home office was renovated in 2020 during the Covid epidemic when Kellett worked from home.
On the second floor, the main bedroom suite has two sitting areas, French doors that lead to a private terrace.
“Drinking coffee in the early morning hours from this terrace one can hear the roar of the lions from the close by Greenville Zoo giving one the feeling of being on the set of Out of Africa,” the owner said. There is also a junior suite with a fireplace and marble full bath.
There is a third bedroom on this floor.
The third floor has a bonus room and the other two bedrooms.
A saltwater pool and Jacuzzi were installed in 2020.
