A West Columbia man was killed in an early-morning crash when the moped he was driving was hit from behind by a car.

The man, Brandon Edward Clance, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene just after 3 a.m. Thursday, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said in a release.

Clance had been driving his 2023 moped westbound along Charleston Highway when a 2018 Mazda sedan hit him from behind. The crash occurred near the 3400 block of Charleston Highway, officials said. The driver of the sedan was not injured, according to the state’s highway patrol.

The crash is still under investigation by the coroner’s office and South Carolina Highway Patrol.
