Reptile with moldy food. Roaches in BBQ room. SC Upstate restaurants worst September inspections
South Carolina health inspectors found multiple violations at restaurants in the Upstate in September, from a reptile found in a box with moldy food to live roaches in a BBQ pit room. The state each month releases grades and inspection reports for food establishments across Upstate counties.
Here are the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in September.
Blue Heron of Clemson at 134 Exchange St. in Anderson
Blue Heron of Clemson had an inspection on Sept. 25 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed employees handling ready to eat foods with bare hands.
Parasite destruction for raw fish used in sushi could not be verified at time of inspection. Raw animal foods were seen not stored in a manner to prevent contamination of ready to eat food. Food preparation was seen at a ware washing sink without proper sanitizing of the sink.
Dirty kitchen equipment was seen stored as clean. Black debris was seen embedded in deep grooves in cutting boards. An accumulation of black debris was seen inside the ice machine.
Chicken wings that were not fully cooked were seen stored inside cooler with other ready to eat foods. Leftover food was seen not properly reheated.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Oct. 1 and got an A grade.
Creekside Bar-B-Que at 1115 Salem Church Road in Anderson
Creekside Bar-B-Que had an inspection on Sept. 4 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed live roaches in the pit room in igloo coolers, in the large cook room and on the walls of the pit room. Also, rodent droppings were observed in the employee restroom and on shelves in the front cabinet near the entry door.
Dead pests were seen on top of food products. An accumulation of dead roaches were seen in multiple glue traps.
Floors throughout the facility were seen in very poor repair and no longer sealed. Multiple areas of the walls in the facility were seen in very poor repair with obvious holes. An accumulation of grime was seen on the ceiling of the walk-in cooler.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 18 and got an A grade.
Little Pigs BBQ at 1401 N Main St. in Anderson
Little Pigs BBQ had an inspection on Sept. 2 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed employees switch tasks without washing hands.
A worker was seen prepping Cole slaw without wearing gloves. Pans with old labels were seen on the clean rack. Food debris was seen on clean pans stored under the prep table.
Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. A gap was seen at the bottom of the kitchen door exit.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 11 and got an A grade.
Uptown Lounge at 301 N. McDuffie St. in Anderson
Uptown Lounge had an inspection on Sept. 4 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed an employee eating in the kitchen.
Employees were seen not washing hands when changing tasks. A reptile was found in box of decaying food.
Mounted wall slicer seen with build up of food debris. Certain foods were seen not properly reheated.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 9 and got an A grade.
Coronets Mexican Restaurant at 2119 Wade Hampton Blvd. in Greenville
Coronets Mexican Restaurant had an inspection on Sept. 9 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed utensils stored as clean in bus tub soiled with food debris. Also observed plates with food debris stored as clean under cook line counter.
Employees were seen changing tasks without washing hands. Tomato sauce was seen stored in an open can. The can opener blade was seen soiled with food debris. Cooked shredded chicken was seen thawing on shelving.
Open containers of spices were seen stored under prep tables.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 22 and got an A grade.
Osaka Japanese Grill at 700 W Wade Hampton Blvd. in Greenville
Osaka Japanese Grill had an inspection on Sept. 10 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed chicken stored on the floor during preparation.
Facility did not provide proof of parasite destruction for farm raised salmon, yellowtail or tuna used for sashimi. Accumulation of black bio-film seen in ice machine. Vegetable slicer was not clean to sight or touch.
Bucket of sanitizer solution was seen at a high enough concentration to render it toxic.
The back screen door was seen with tears in the screen and gaps around the edges. Kitchen equipment was seen encrusted with grease and food debris.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 19 and got an A grade.
Taqueria Restaurante Simon at 613-A North Main St. in Greenville
Taqueria Restaurante Simon had an inspection on Sept. 18 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed bags of rice, beans and sugar stored directly on the floor.
An employee was seen handling a tortilla with bare hands. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Found foods with no date marking on them after being cooked more than 24 hours ago. Plumbing was seen leaking under the handwashing sink.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 24 and got an A grade.
