New measles cases reported as outbreak spreads in SC. Here’s where, how many new cases

The measles outbreak in the Upstate continues to spread with four new cases identified since Friday.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health said four new cases were confirmed, bringing the total number this year to 23 and the number of cases in the current outbreak to 20. Two were close contacts to known cases. They were quarantining at home and none were present in any school settings while contagious, the health department said.

In addition, the previously identified case of a child at Crunch Fitness in Greenville has been linked with the current outbreak due to unrecognized community transmission. Students at Global Academy in Spartanburg were able to return to school Tuesday after the exclusionary period was over. Students at Fairforest Elementary, also in Spartanburg, will return Wednesday.

The department’s Mobile Health Unit will be at these locations this week to offer the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine at no cost. • Wednesday, Oct. 22: 2-6 p.m. at Wellford Baptist Church, 235 Syphrit Road, Wellford, S.C., 29385 • Thursday, Oct. 23: 2-6 p.m. at Dr. T. K. Gregg Community Center, 650 Howard St., Spartanburg, S.C., 29303
