A pair of Columbia restaurants — both in the same neighborhood — have been mentioned in the prestigious Michelin Guide that recognizes excellence in the culinary world.

Italian restaurant Di Vino Rosso and longtime bistro Motor Supply Company, each located on Gervais Street in downtown Columbia’s Vista district, were listed in the “recommended” category of the Michelin Guide’s inaugural American South selections, which were announced in a recent ceremony at the Peace Center in Greenville.

“The cuisine of the American South is a rich blend of cultural influences, brought to life by skilled chefs who have crafted some of the region’s most iconic dishes,” Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, said in a release. “Our anonymous inspectors were deeply impressed by the region’s culinary prowess, and this inaugural selection reflects their findings — from Southern staples like barbecue, Creole and seafood, to international flavors.”

The menu at Di Vino Rosso is known for upscale Italian favorites, such as the pappardelle alla bolognese ($34) and the crispy pork osso buco ($45), among many others. Meanwhile, the menu at Motor Supply is known for its Cheshire Farms pork chop ($37) and Chatel Farms N.Y. strip steak ($48), among a host of other offerings.

While Motor Supply and Di Vino Rosso were the only Columbia-area eateries mentioned among the American South selections, a host of restaurants from other parts of South Carolina were named in the various levels of Michelin honors.

Four SC restaurants — Greenville’s Scoundrel and Charleston’s Malagón Mercado y Taperia, Vern’s, and Wild Common — each received one Michelin star, a highly coveted designation in the restaurant industry.

And 14 other restaurants from across the Palmetto State joined Motor Supply and Di Vino Rosso in Michelin’s “recommended” category. Those include Charleston’s Chubby Fish, FIG, Lowland, Husk, The Establishment, The Restaurant at Zero George, Sorrelle, and Xiao Bao Biscuit; Greenville’s The Anchorage, Jianna, and Soby’s; Myrtle Beach’s O.A.K. Prime; Travelers Rest’s Topsoil, and Sullivan’s Island’s Obstinate Daughter.

Meanwhile, three SC restaurants, all in Charleston, found themselves in Bib Gourmand category of Michelin’s American South listings. The Bib Gourmand designation “recognizes eateries for great food at a great value,” Michelin noted. The three Charleston restaurants on the Bib Gourmand list included Rodney Scott’s BBQ, Lewis Barbecue, and Leon’s Oyster Shop.
